The Microfinance Rating Outlook Report 2008

This report aims at providing an overview of the state of the microfinance institutions rating market as at the end of 2007.

In 2007 demand within the microfinance rating market grow by 19.5% and 539 ratings were performed bringing the global grand total to 2,280. With almost 1,000 MFIs having undergone a rating between 1997 and 2007, the microfinance rating market has developed from a negligible sector to a self-sufficient and mature market in certain countries, although the situation isn’t harmonious across regions.

Microfinance in Africa

The Africa Diagnostic Report

The objective of this publication is to analyze the accomplishments, challenges and gaps in expanding access to microfi nance for employment creation for millions of low-income people in Africa, especially women and youth. It will try to answer the following questions: “What does microfinance in Africa look like today? Who are the customers of microfi nance institutions, what are their needs and wants and what kinds of institutions are serving them? What good practices exist in the provision of financial services to low-income people? etc. 

The study has been commissioned by the Africa Microfinance Action Forum (AMAF), a voluntary advocacy group of African leaders who are committed to the advancement of microfinance in Africa, and Women’s World Banking (WWB), who jointly initiated the Africa Microfinance Strategy Initiative.

ADA has cofinanced and provided input for this study with the Governement of Spain, The Governement of Luxembourg and CARE.
